Tulum is the only known archaeological site located by the sea. Its greatest attraction is its location.
It stands on a cliff facing the rising sun looking out on views of the Caribbean Sea that are nothing else than spectacular. The Mayan ruins of Tulum are the third most visited historical site in all of Mexico.
Today parts of the Mayan ruins have been restored for tourism purposes and although local Mayans continued to visit the temples to pray, these acts were abandoned in the late 20th century.
