Located just north of Valladolid, this is a yet little known site and therefore never overwhelmed with tourists. Ek Balam in the Mayan idiom stands for "black jaguar". When the Maya abandoned Ek Balam, the site became hidden beneath the dense low-lying jungle. As with all of the Mayan pyramids, these ruins were discovered when archaeologists noticed a group of hills with trees and bushes growing out of them. Carefully excavating the mounds, they uncovered buildings and artifacts which had remained hidden for hundreds of years.
After our visit of the archeological site, our expedition will continue towards Valladolid, a little Mayan town located half-way between Merida and Cancun. Valladolid is a small, quaint town that has preserved its special colonial flavor. The majority of the town's people still wear typical Mayan clothing. Mayan women typically sit on one side of the plaza where they display and sell their handicrafts, which include hand-embroidered dresses and blouses, place mats and table cloths.
Our expedition to the ruins of Ek Balam is followed by a jungle biking experience and a swim in the waters of a sacred Mayan cenote (sinkhole). A cenote is a natural well that is formed in the limestone floor of the Yucatan Peninsula. They are wonders of nature.
